Pacifica Pet Dog Training Class Offerings

NEW!  First Class Starts 7/3/08

Puppy 1:  Puppy-only classes are VERY important to give your puppy the right start in life.  All puppies should attend a puppy-only class starting when they are between 12 -18 weeks old - even if you've had a dog before.  This is because puppy classes consist of more than just behavior training.  The puppies get to play offleash so that they can learn how to "work & play well with others".  Even if your puppy gets along well with other dogs in the house, it's important that he or she learns how to play and communicate with strange dogs also.  In addition, our puppies get the opportunity to socialize with other humans in the class so that they are also more likely to be comfortable with other people later in life.

Cost:  $175

Basic 1:  This is a fun, beginner-level obedience class designed for adolescent and adult dogs.  You will learn how to teach your dog to sit, lie down, stand, stay, walk nicely on leash, wait at the door, “watch me”, not jump up on people, “leave-it”, to perform a trick, and most importantly to come when called!

This 8-week class is geared towards people or dogs who have never attended a positive training class OR for those who would like a dog-training refresher course!

Cost:  $170

Small Dog Basic 1:  This beginner class is geared especially towards the needs and personalities of the little dogs.  The content is the same as in Basic 1, but with that small dog twist!

Dogs must be 25 lbs. or less to qualify for this class.

Cost:  $170

Basic 2: In this 7-week class we work to improve the reliability of commands your dog learned in Basic Training I.  We review the basic commands, add distractions, and ask our dogs to perform them from a distance.  We also play a board game called "My Dog Can Do That".  This game helps you to be more creative with your training, and gives you the tools to train your dog to do just about anything.  It's loads of fun!

Cost:  $150

"Growly Dog" ClassThis 9-week course is specifically designed to teach you how to manage and treat your dog that is aggressive to other dogs when he or she is on-leash. This class is not appropriate for dogs who only exhibit aggression toward other dogs while off-leash, or who exhibit aggression toward people. We begin the first few classes without your dog to work on handling methods in a low-stress environment, then we bring in dogs to practice.  By the end of class, we take a few "field trips" so you can practice what you learned, with coaching, in a real-world envrionment.  Class meets once a week and ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED AT ALL CLASSES.

This class is limited to three dogs, and requires a pre-screening
to ensure that this class will be appropriate for you and your dog.  Also, because of the small size of this class, a $100 deposit will also be required to complete your registration.  To register, please fill out and return the "Growly Dog Questionnaire" to us.

Cost:  $275

Pre-requisites for all Pacifica

Pet Dog Classes:

  • Adult dogs must be current on rabies and distemper/parvo vaccinations and owners must be able to show proof of vaccination.
  • Puppies must be current on DHLPP (meaning the pup has had at least 1 vaccination, and the latest one was given within 2 weeks prior to start of class)
  • Large dogs who are are aggressive towards people may not participate.
  • Large dogs with dog-dog aggression or reactivity will be decided on a case-by-case basis.  Call or e-mail for more information.
  • Even if the dog is the primary responsibility of a child in the home, an adult 18 or older must accompany every dog to each class.
  • We only allow one dog per person in class.
  • All family members are welcome and encouraged to attend.
  • We do not allow choke, shock, or pinch collars in class.  If you have difficulty controlling large, excitable dogs, many new tools on the market (such as the Gentle Leader, Sensation Harness, and Easy-Walk Harness) are both more effective AND more humane.

Guest Trainers & Special Topics

We will also be bringing in "Guest" Trainers occasionally to teach classes which are different than we usually offer.

Some examples of  Special Topics classes:

  • Canine Agility - teaches your dog to run an obstacle course.
  • Canine Freestyle - teaches you dancing with your dog.
  • Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Classes prepare you for a CGC Exam.  Passing this exam labels your dog as a "good citizen" which can be useful in a variety of contexts such as apartment rentals, therapy dogs, and more.
  • Rally-O - a competition obedience course.
If there are any classes you would like for us to schedule, don't be afraid to ask!
